The Zoll Monitor Defibrillator Pacemaker is optioned with Non-invasive Blood Pressure and Pulse Oximetry and provides the functionality of a portable vital signs monitor, all in the one unit.
A portable defibrillator is taken on all RFDS flights. It provides immediate lifesaving defibrillation - an electrical shock to restart the heart - should a patient have a cardiac arrest.
The ECG monitor enables us to record a full 12-lead electrocardiogram on a patient, particularly important in diagnosis of heart attacks and cardiac arrhythmias. The Zoll E series has in-built software which performs an analysis of the ECG trace to assist medical and nursing staff diagnose difficult ECG's. The full ECG can be printed out using the internal printer.
In addition to 12 lead electrocardiorams, the unit provides continuous monitoring during flight, displayed on the high intensity screen, which enables staff to observe a patient’s cardiac rhythm and watch for any abnormalities which may occur.
A non-invasive "transcutaneous" pacemaker enables us to pace patients (electrically stimulate the heart) should their heart be beating too slowly as occurs in some conditions.
The additional monitoring option of Non-invasive Blood Pressure enables the unit to automatically record a BP through a cuff at regular intervals.
Pulse Oximetry enables oxygen saturation (a measure of the oxygen level in the blood) to be regularly recorded through a finger probe.
The equipment operates on rechargeable batteries or on mains power. It has been specially "ruggedized" for use in the field. It includes an internal printer and a wide variety of alarms to warn staff of abnormal physiological parameters. It is carried on every aircraft.
Approximate cost: $25,000.
