Kalgoorlie has been described as the Gold Capital of the world and it is the area of Australia’s biggest gold rush, which drew many thousands of people to the twin towns of Kalgoorlie and Boulder in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Today the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has a population of approximately 30,000 people. Gold was first discovered in 1893 by Paddy Hannan at nearby Coolgardie. The region is still one of the world’s richest gold producers as modern mining methods are used to reach the deeper deposits.
The RFDS (Western Operations) maintains a base administration office, a visitor centre and hangar facilities at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport.
