Derby is situated on King Sound in the West Kimberley region Founded in the early 1880’s and being the first town to be settled in the Kimberley, Derby was for many years a vital port for provisioning the growing pastoral and mining industries in the days when coastal steamers were the only means of communication. As a deep water port it was also used to export cattle to overseas markets.
