Derby is situated on King Sound in the West Kimberley region 2643 km’s north of Perth. Founded in the early 1880’s and being the first town to be settled in the Kimberley, Derby was for many years a vital port for provisioning the growing pastoral and mining industries in the days when coastal steamers were the only means of communication. As a deep water port it was also used to export cattle to overseas markets. Today Derby is a major communication hub and medical centre with nearly 5,000 residents. It has the unique distinction of having the highest tides in Australia, peaking at over 11 metres.
The RFDS (Western Operations) office is located in the town with Hangar facilities at the Derby Airport.
